DOCKLANDS THEATRE

Building Stories Project from Level 5  2021-22

This project considered the repurposing of the Patera Building, which is an example of British high-tech architecture designed by Michael Hopkins, to house a small performance venue. The project explored the reuse the Patera to meet the expectations of today’s visitors to secure its survival in the long-term. The project took a contemporary approach to theatre spaces by being open plan and modular, mimicking the Patera. The multi-use space would be used as a theatre during the night and youth community centre during the day. The design consisted of step stools made from reconstituted foam that could be rearranged for different functions. These stools were inspired by Assembles RIBA Brutalist Playgrounds, featuring different abstract shapes in concrete where play was up to interpretation and there were no defined parts.
